The Note That Made a Brick Wall Tumble Down
Posted by Grant on Jan 7, 2020
One of my 2x great-grandmother's was a woman named Laura Chabot. Her mother was stated as being Marie Poyard and her father was Charles Chabot. I spent years trying to get past the Poyard / Chabot lines. Charles was supposedly born in Quebec and Marie in Vermont. I compiled lists from possible candidates using Census, Baptism, whatever I could find. Trying to narrow down the list, excluding people that didn't connect. Over and over I kept running into a brick wall. I'd revisit over and over trying to find any clue. Over those years I connected with some distant family that comes from this same line of people. One day I received a message on the Ancestry.com website. A family member was cleaning out the house of a deceased family member. In the closet they found a tiny piece of paper. On that paper contained the information that I had been searching for years. That piece of paper is attached to that post. Using that info I was able to track down the marriage record which included information to finally knock down this brick wall. I ended up tracking that Chabot line back to the ancestor that came from France. Marie Poyard's last name was also difficult to trace at first. I discovered that it was originally spelled Poigué. If you are ever cleaning out someone's house, remember that those small pieces of paper could be extremely valuable pieces of information.
